Read on for some winter and spring holiday inspiration and offers from around Aotearoa New Zealand, including a focus on two of the country’s most spectacular regions – the West Coast and Coromandel.
Calling all twitchers, walkers and bikers to the Coromandel
Bird-lovers will squawk with delight at the Pūkorokoro Miranda Shorebird Centre’s new guided tour. Spot thousands of birds and hear fantastic feathery tales including the kuaka/bar-tailed godwit’s world-record breaking flight all the way from Alaska.
It’s possible and a whole lot of fun to bike to Miranda on the easy Hauraki Rail Trail that traces a pretty path beside the bird-filled Firth of Thames, where you’ll also find the Miranda Tasman Holiday Park.
And in breaking news… The track to Mautohe Cathedral Cove, damaged in February 2023 by Cyclone Gabrielle, will be open to walkers in time for summer according to DOC. Yippee! Find out more here, and choose from 15 awesome holiday parks for your next Coromandel holiday.

Brilliant West Coast biking for all
The West Coast is wonderful place to explore on two-wheels whether you’re a hardcore mountain biker or just ditching your training wheels. World-class trails already include the Heaphy Track, Old Ghost Road, Paparoa Track Great Walk/great ride and West Coast Wilderness Trail; and now there’s three more to add to your biking bucket list.
Winding beside the wild Tasman Sea, and through bird-filled bush and untouched wetland, the easy Kawatiri Coastal Trail makes a satisfying outing for riders of all ages. The trail currently runs south from Westport for almost 30km via the Carters Beach TOP 10 – a great base for biking and Buller region adventures.
Fit, advanced-level mountain bikers might like to tackle the recently opened Pike 29 Memorial Track. Climbing for 800m through beautiful beech forest to link up with the Paparoa Track, this expertly crafted piece of singletrack is dedicated to the 29 men who lost their lives in the tragic Pike River Mine Disaster. The Punakaiki Beach Camp and Greymouth TOP 10 Holiday Park are great places to knock off this and/or the Paparoa Track.
The latest addition to the Coast’s smorgasbord of cycle trails is the Lake Brunner Scenic Trail – a grade 2 (easy) and splendid way to explore the shores of region’s largest lake. Feel the vibe with this super-scenic video.
